Africa Matters Ambassadors Program 2023

How do I qualify to be eligible for the program?

You must be a young African person between the ages of 17-29 in one of the following countries: Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Uganda, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya, Algeria, and South Africa.

Why is the program not available in my country?

We can only select ten (10) or eleven (11) countries per year for the program and aim to include different countries yearly. This is also subject to how a country shows much interest in the program. 

Will I be required to travel?

The program is online/remote. However, if funding provided, there will be a residential summit that all AMAP Ambassadors will be required to attend. This summit will last no longer than a week, and AMI will cover all costs. 

How do I apply?

You can apply online using the application link.  You can also find the link on our website and all social media pages after 10th October 2022. 

Is there any application fee to join the program?

No. It is free.

What language of instruction is the program?

The program will be instructed predominantly in English.

What is the structure of the program?

The program has three (3) components. The first is bi-monthly educational and interactive sessions with facilitators on different topics (e.g. financial literacy, personal development, social entrepreneurship and others.) which are supplemented with mandatory assignments. The second component is mentorship, where each AMAP Ambassador is assigned a mentor to assist in their personal and professional development. The third component is a community engagement project, where each AMAP Ambassador are required to identify issues that affect their communities and establish tangible and sustainable solutions to rectify social ills. The CEP is to be carried out by the end of the program. 

How long is the program?

 The program will commence in February 2023 and conclude in December 2023.

Is this program full-time?

No, the program is not full-time, and sessions mainly occur once every two weeks for two hours in the evening, however, commitment is required, attending each session, submitting each assignment after each session, keeping in consistent contact with your mentor and completing your community project.

What is the selection process timeline?

The online application will open on 10th October 2022 at 12:00 CAT and close on 6th November 2022 at 23:59 CAT. Once applications close, the AMI Team and AMAP Alumni will review the applications and invite successful applicants to an interview in early-January 2023. The results of the interviews will be communicated via email, and selected applicants will be invited to join the AMAP Cohort in late January 2023.

Will we receive assistance with our community engagement projects?

Yes, AMAP Ambassadors will receive guidance and advice from the AMAP Team, their mentors and sometimes other AMAP Ambassadors (sharing ideas and knowledge is encouraged), however, executing the project will be your sole responsibility.  

Is this program free? Will we receive financial assistance during the program?

Yes, this program is free. AMI will provide data to successful applicants to attend the online sessions and seed funding to assist with the execution of community engagement projects. However, if the cost of a project exceeds the amount of seed funding, the program participant will be required to fundraise the remaining amount. Tips and advice on fundraising will be shared during the program. 

Is there a specific type of community engagement project I need to present?

No. The project needs to identify an issue/developmental opportunity in your community and aim to implement an ongoing solution (one part of the implementation process be executed during the course of the program). We strongly encourage you to continue your community engagement projects after completing the program.

Is the program predominantly in English?

Yes, all blended learning sessions and assignments are conducted in English. We highly recommend that you have a working and professional knowledge of English before applying to the program. The rollout of French will commence in the near future.

After completion of the program, what benefits will I receive as an AMAP Ambassador?

After successfully completing the AMAP program, you will join the Alumni Network of AMI Ambassadors and Leaders. As an alum of the program, you can become a mentor to incoming AMAP Ambassadors, Attend and/or co-host AMI-related events and sessions in your country, continue your work with Africa Matters as an AMI Intern; facilitate Africa Matters flagship programs; become an AMAP Application Reviewer and/or Interviewer, attend Future Residential Summit and/or AMI related events (if funding is available) and so much more.
