Twitter Responds: Zimbabwe's military claims to have Mugabe in custody

Early on Wednesday morning Zimbabwe's military announced that it had taken custody of President Robert Mugabe.

Two uniformed officers appeared on the state broadcaster to announce that“the situation in our country has moved to another level”, that the president and his family are safe and to assure the country and the world that this was not a coup.

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice,” said the main speaker, who was identified as Maj. Gen. S. B. Moyo, the army’s chief of staff.

Military spokesman Major General SB Moyo has addressed the nation after troops take over the state broadcaster ZBC.
