On Monday the BBC reported that Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai had decided to fire 22,000 teachers. Two-thirds of teachers tested had failed to score 75% or higher on assessments given to their 6-year-old pupils.
Hundreds of civil servants led by President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protested the decision and the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) threatened the government with industrial action, but this morning President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his support for the decision.
