Meet the Board: Natasha Budhram on Resilience, Leadership, and Collective Impact

Meet the Board is a series that introduces the people who help steward Africa Matters Initiative’s mission and long-term vision.

Through these reflections, we’re sharing the values, experiences, and perspectives that guide our governance and leadership — offering a window into the thinking that shapes AMI’s work today and the direction we’re moving toward.

In this reflection, we hear from Natasha Budhram, Board Member of Africa Matters Initiative’s Board of Directors.

Why Africa Matters Initiative

What draws me to Africa Matters Initiative is the steady, consistent impact driven by individuals who have remained committed to motivating and uplifting young people, even in moments when many organisations were forced to step back.

In an environment where the challenges facing non-profits have caused many to close their doors, AMI has continued to move forward with resilience. This is what inspires me most, being part of an organisation that not only believes in youth leadership, but continues to show up for it, even when it is difficult.

This next chapter represents strength, growth, and collective resilience. It excites me to be part of this journey and to work alongside a Board and internal team that truly practice what they believe in.

In HER Own Words

A Leadership Reflection

Malala Yousafzai reminds us that youth leadership is not defined by age, but by courage and conviction.

Her journey reflects the importance of using one’s experiences as a foundation for growth. Through this, we build resilience — both as individuals and as leaders.

For young changemakers, my advice is simple: develop self-awareness. Understanding who you are is what allows you to lead others with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
