Meet the Board is a series that introduces the people who help steward Africa Matters Initiative’s mission and long-term vision.
Through these reflections, we’re sharing the values, experiences, and perspectives that guide our governance and leadership — offering a window into the thinking that shapes AMI’s work today and the direction we’re moving toward.
In this reflection, we hear from Dr. Rekgotsofetse Chikane, Vice Chair of Africa Matters Initiative’s Board of Directors.

Why Africa Matters Initiative
What draws me most to AMI is not just its potential to change the lives of young African leaders, but also its actual ability to do this on a day-to-day basis.
From our work across the continent with hundreds of participants and ambassadors, AMI has a proven track record of creating impactful change. What is probably most important to me about this impact is that we are truly contributing to the creation of a generation of young people who understand the value of our continent, the importance of taking control of the narrative of our continent, and the willingness to step into the trenches and turn what we often see as imaginary into something concrete and real.
As AMI continues into its next chapter, I am genuinely excited to see the ongoing influence we have across the continent and to watch all those who pass through our programme leave their footprint across the globe.
In His Own Words
A Leadership Reflection
Perfer et obdura, dolor hic tibi proderit olim - "Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you"
This is a quote that guides my actions every day. It reminds me that creating change in our communities change is hard, but will always be worth it in the end
