This week vendors and unregistered taxi operators in Mutare and Harare's central business districts were forcibly driven off their illegal vending sites by the military.
While council spokesperson Spren Mutiwi accused vendors of shunning designated vending sites that had been set up to accommodate the evicted vendors, the vendors claimed the designated sites either did not exists or were insufficient, were located outside the central business district and were not user friendly.
The exercise, code-named Operation Restore Sanity, was started by Mugabe shortly before his removal and has continued under the new leadership. It involves the military as well as the police, and has begun being rolled out in all major cities and towns.
